What 's an MCP?

Think of an MCP (Model Context Protocol) as a “universal USB-C cable” created by Anthropic to connect applications and systems with language models — without the need to build APIs or custom integrations. It enables seamless, standardized communication with LLMs like Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or LLama.

What 's an AI Agent?

An AI Agent is a more advanced entity. It may be powered by one or several MCP Servers, and it can either include a chat interface or operate fully in the background — executing actions, making decisions, and automating processes across your environment.

So, what’s the difference?

The key difference between an MCP Server and an AI Agent is this:

  • An MCP Server is the bridge — it connects an app or system with a language model through a defined interface, often behaving like a helpful assistant.

  • An AI Agent can leverage multiple MCPs to act autonomously. It may or may not involve a chat interface and is designed to take actions on your behalf, based on pre-configured rules — without needing your direct input.

Knowing this difference helps you choose the right approach for your needs.
